Empowering Ukraine’s Youth Through Social Entrepreneurship: A Pathway to Resilience and Innovation

In recent years, Ukraine has witnessed a significant rise in youth engagement in social entrepreneurship — a business model that seeks to address societal challenges while generating economic value. This trend emerges amidst a backdrop of economic instability and limited employment opportunities, particularly affecting the younger demographic. As of 2023, the youth unemployment rate in Ukraine stood at 22%, underscoring the urgent need for alternative pathways to employment and community development.
Social enterprises in Ukraine are tackling a diverse array of issues, including inclusion, education, agrifood sector, and rural development. By integrating innovative solutions with sustainable business practices, these enterprises not only create job opportunities but also contribute to the broader socio-economic resilience of their communities. However, young social entrepreneurs often encounter challenges such as limited access to funding, inadequate mentorship, and a lack of comprehensive business education.
Youth Empowerment Project: bridging gaps for rural youth
Addressing these challenges, the Platform for Social Change launched the Youth Empowerment Project, targeting youth aged 15 to 24 who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET), particularly in the rural communities of the Khmelnytskyi region. This initiative aims to create opportunities for learning, employment, and entrepreneurial skill development among this vulnerable group.
The project is crucial for several reasons:
- Skill development: By providing comprehensive training in areas such as digital marketing, public speaking, and business planning, the project equips participants with the competencies necessary to initiate and manage social enterprises.
- Psychological support and career counseling: Recognizing the importance of mental well-being in professional development, the project offers personalized counseling sessions. This support helps participants navigate career uncertainties and build resilience.
- Community engagement: By focusing on rural areas, the project fosters community development and encourages participants to address local challenges through entrepreneurial solutions.
Such initiatives are not only addressing the immediate needs of unemployed and untrained youth but are also laying the groundwork for a more innovative socio-economic landscape in Ukraine.
Our Impact: what have we already reached?
At the Platform for Social Change, we believe in the transformative power of social entrepreneurship. By equipping youth with the right skills and support, we help them transition from job seekers to job creators. Here are some key achievements of our programs, which highlight the importance of such initiatives:
Bootcamp Meetings for Skill Enhancement in Schools and Lyceums
Our bootcamp meetings have been designed to provide youth with the tools they need to thrive in today’s dynamic labor market. Through a selection process, we chose six lyceums, reaching over 570 students in the process. Topics covered include digital marketing, public speaking, and social entrepreneurship. These bootcamps are directly aligned with youth needs, empowering them with the practical skills and knowledge required for future success.
Impact: Participants gained valuable experience in digital marketing, public speaking, and entrepreneurship, with 179 youth completing a digital marketing bootcamp, 192 enhancing their soft skills, and 200 exploring social entrepreneurship as a career path. By focusing on practical learning, participants not only learned theoretical concepts but also applied them to real-world challenges, resulting in hands-on experience and increased confidence.
Psychological Support and Career Counseling
The inclusion of psychological support has been important in ensuring that youth remain motivated and resilient throughout the bootcamp programs. By offering 600 hours of personalized counseling, we helped participants address career uncertainties, stress, and personal challenges. This support helped build their mental resilience and boosted their confidence as they pursued career or entrepreneurial goals.
Impact: 40% of surveyed participants expressed increased confidence in their ability to contribute to their communities, while 32.6% reported feeling more empowered to pursue new career opportunities or start social enterprises.
Social Enterprise Development Training
Our Social Enterprise Development Training, launched in March 2025, is aimed at building the foundational skills for business scaling, offering deeper insights into social enterprise development. This program will help young people craft impact-driven business models, secure funding, and develop sustainable enterprises.
Goal: The aim is to foster the next generation of social entrepreneurs who are equipped with the skills to launch and scale businesses that address critical social issues in their communities.
Looking ahead
The ongoing development of social entrepreneurship programs for youth in Ukraine is crucial for the country’s future. These initiatives are not only creating jobs and supporting economic growth but also nurturing a generation of socially conscious leaders who are committed to driving positive change. By providing the tools, mentorship, and networks needed for success, social entrepreneurship is empowering Ukraine’s youth to build the future they envision.
Through our programs, we are shaping a new era of entrepreneurship where purpose and profit go hand in hand. As Ukraine continues to recover and rebuild, initiatives like ours are vital in creating a sustainable and prosperous future for all.
