A Cooperative Instead of Working Abroad: How 42 Families Built a Shared Business in Their Community
When jobs nearly disappeared in the villages of the Dunayivtsi community, many people left for cities or seasonal work abroad. The community team decided to look for a way to help people earn a living at home. That is how the “Yahidnyi Rai” (“Berry Paradise”) cooperative was created. Today, it unites 42 families from 14 villages, sells dozens of tons of berries each year, and creates new opportunities for local development. This is a story about how social entrepreneurship can become a real economic model for Ukrainian villages.

In Shepetivka, in the Khmelnytskyi region, FrontGift produces honey-based desserts, processes up to 5–7 tons of honey per season, and creates thousands of gift sets that are already representing Ukraine abroad. With the support of the Platform for Social Change, the “Dary Hutsulshchyny” cooperative has gained new momentum for growth: implementing digital tools, expanding market access, and preparing to scale production. Today, this model provides income for over 1,000 local residents, processes up to 200 tons of products annually, and keeps more than UAH 20 million within local communities.
